Storm delivers more than half inch of rain to Sacramento

The moderate storm that dropped a half-to-three quarters of an inch in the Sacramento region is expected to continue through today.

The wet weather was slow to arrive, but overnight rainfall totals started to build. Totals as of 6 a.m. for the preceding 24 hours include: .90 in Auburn, .86 in Newcastle, .83 in Orangevale, .71 at Folsom Lake, .71 at Rancho Cordova, .66 in Sacramento and .75 in Elk Grove.

The National Weather Service notes that once the showers fade away, strong winds are expected to develop behind the system. The winds are forecast to be present Thursday into Saturday.

The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Today: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. South southeast wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: A 50 percent chance of showers, mainly before 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. Calm wind becoming north northwest around 6 mph after midnight. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers before 10am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. North northwest wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.

Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 40. North northwest wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 68. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Friday night: Clear, with a low around 40.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 68.

Saturday night: Clear, with a low around 40.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 66.

Sunday night: Clear, with a low around 40.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 66.

Monday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 40.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 68.
