Granite Bay woman seeks return of husband’s ashes stolen in burglary

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a burglar who stole the ashes of a Granite Bay woman’s husband, as well as those of her cats.

Suella Martin left her home on Long Meadow Road to run a 40-minute errand the afternoon of Oct. 31. When she returned, she discovered the house ransacked, jewlery and other valuables swiped and worse of all that two urns were missing. One contained her husband Gary Martin’s ashes. The other contained the ashes of her two beloved cats Ticker and Pumpkin.

Martin said the thief or thieves reached into a small wooden box clearly labeled “in loving memory” and took the smaller metal box containing the ashes. Mr. Martin, a radiologist, died five years ago after a brief battle with cancer. The cats died a year and a half later, Martin said.

“Obviously it was a box with ashes,” she said. “It wasn’t a fancy urn with jewels.”

“It was kind of comforting that (the ashes) were there. The children and I didn’t know what to do with them so we just left them there,” Martin said of their perch on a fireplace mantel in the den.

While the jewelry was of value, Martin said its the missing ashes they break her heart.

“It’s like robbing from the dead taking someone’s ashes,” she said.

The reward is offered by Placer County Crime Stoppers. Anyone with information and who wishes to remain anonymous is asked to call (800) 923-8191, or report a tip online at www.placercrimestoppers.org. If the tip results in an arrest, the caller could receive up to $1,000.

Information on the case also can be provided by calling Detective Dan Meier at (916) 652-2411.
