DUI task force will be on lookout for impaired drivers following Causeway Classic

Sacramento law enforcement agencies are cautioning football fans planning to attend Saturday’s Causeway Classic at California State University, Sacramento about the perils of drinking and driving.

Officers with Sacramento County’s DUI task force will conduct saturation patrols targeting people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in and near CSUS, where the annual match-up between Sac State and UC Davis football teams is expected to draw large crowds. Although alcohol is permitted during the event, authorities urge participants to drink responsibly and designate a sober driver.

“Those who try to drink and drive should be forewarned,” task force spokesman Officer Andrew Bates said in a written statement. “We will be out in force looking for impaired drivers, and we will catch and arrest you. No warnings, no excuses.”

Crashes involving impaired driving killed more than 10,000 people in 2010, accounting for 31 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States, according to a task force news release.

Impaired drivers risk not only killing or injuring themselves or others, but the financial consequences of a crash or arrest. Authorities warn that violators often face jail time, loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, attorney fees, time away from work and other expenses.
