Potentially hazardous high winds are expected to slam the mountains and the foothills Thursday.

The change in the weather from wet to windy is also expected to bring gusts in excess of 30 mph to Sacramento.

The windy conditions forecast by the National Weather Service for Thursday are the result of a strong high pressure system building into the Pacific Northwest combined with a deep low pressure system off the southern California coast.

At 6 a.m., the California Department of Transportation issued a high wind advisory for travel over the Yolo Causeway and the Bryte Bend Bridge in Yolo County.

The weather system that tracked through on Tuesday night and Wednesday dropped a total of .79 of an inch of rain on Sacramento. That rainy weather is pretty much history as the approaching wind event takes form.

The NWS forecast calls for winds around 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph Thursday night at Blue Canyon along Interstate 80 in the mountains. In Placerville, along Highway 50, winds are predicted to get up to 25 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph Thursday night.

The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:
