Futsal comes to Natomas as Sacramento gets game’s first paved soccer court

Published: Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 - 3:50 pm

Futsal anyone? The city of Sacramento’s first futsal court will be dedicated Saturday in Natomas.

Futsal, played on a paved soccer court, was originally developed in South America in the 1930s and 1940s due to a shortage of soccer fields, according to the city.

Teams have five players to a side. The ball is smaller and has less bounce than a regulation soccer ball.

The new futsal court is part of the $679,000 renovation of Northgate Park. The court is named after the late Arturo Carrillo, community leader and coach for the Jalapenos youth soccer team.

Other improvements to the park include: renovated soccer fields, a safari-themed playground, basketball court upgrades, renovated hopscotch and four-square games, concrete walkways, security cameras and restroom rehabilitation.

The dedication of the Carrillo courts and a futsal demonstration will occur at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Northgate Park, 2825 Mendel Way in South Natomas.
