CHP announces maximum enforcement for Thanksgiving holiday

Published: Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 - 6:53 pm

It’s that time of year: More drivers on the road this holiday week means the California Highway Patrol is about to begin a maximum enforcement period.

During this period – from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 11:59 p.m. Dec. 1 – CHP officers will be enforcing seatbelt laws and looking for “aggressive and impaired drivers,” according to a CHP news release.

The CHP made more than 1,300 arrests for driving under the influence during the same maximum enforcement period last year. Also during that time period, 44 people were killed in collisions statewide, a 37 percent increase from the previous year. Of the 25 drivers and passengers killed in the CHP’s jurisdiction, 40 percent were not wearing seatbelts, according to the CHP.

Motorists who suspect impaired drivers are encouraged to call 911.
