Food trucks open at Sac Airport through Jan. 1

Sacramento-based Foodmob has a mission: “Bringing eats to the streets.” To that end, the consortium of 20-plus mobile food-truck operators recently struck a deal with Sacramento International Airport to bring “food truck service” to the so-called “cell phone parking lot” now through Jan. 1.

Details are a bit sketchy, but essentially food trucks will be at the cell phone waiting area from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “on certain days,” giving travelers (and those picking them up), cab drivers and airport personnel unique dining options.

“We’re in the process of scheduling more trucks through the holiday season,” said Foodmob spokeswoman and food blogger Catherine Enfield ( So far, trucks are scheduled to be there today, Wednesday, Friday and Monday, with more signing up for more dates.

“We want people to use the cell phone lot, and we’re thrilled to have the food trucks here,” said Laurie Slothower, communications and media officer for the Sacramento County Department of Airports. “I’m going to have a gyro for lunch myself.”

The cell phone parking lot is “a place where you can park free of charge for three hours,” Slothower said. “It’s just inside the airport entrance, at Lindbergh and Crossfield drives. Look for the sign that says ‘Free Waiting Area.’”

The area offers an attractive option for motorists picking up passengers at the busy terminals, she said: free parking, no driving around. When arriving passengers debark from their flights, they can use their cell phones to call the friends and/family waiting to pick them up.

The schedule of food trucks will be posted daily at Foodmob members include Bacon Mania, Squeeze Inn, Gyro King, Slightly Skewed and Miz Shirley’s.
