Published: Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013 - 7:02 pm

The female pedestrian killed Wednesday by a motorist in Fair Oaks was identified Thursday by coroner’s officials as Julie Ann Newton of Elk Grove.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office listed the incident Thursday as a criminal motor vehicle accident.

Newton, 55, was walking around noon with a 78-year-old man along Winding Way near Mont View Park when she was struck by a 2004 Ford Taurus that had veered across an oncoming traffic lane, according to the California Highway Patrol. The two pedestrians were walking opposite traffic on a westbound shoulder along Winding Way.

The 53-year-old driver was driving eastbound at approximately 35 mph when he veered left, cut across the westbound lane and hit Newton, the CHP said. The vehicle went over the curb, down an embankment and into a tree.

Newton and the driver were taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver had minor injuries. Her walking companion was not hit.

Further details of the investigation were unavailable Thursday.
