The Bee’s Joe Davidson previews today’s Sac-Joaquin Section football playoff games

DIVISION III SEMIFINAL

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS (9-3) AT SACRAMENTO (10-2)

•  When: 1 p.m.

•  Outlook : When these teams squared off in the 1960s and ’70s at Hughes Stadium, it was for Metro League titles, and the last time they played a game of significance was for the league title in 1992, won by Sacramento. Now the schools, barely two miles apart, are playing for a spot in a section tittle game after spirited postseason runs. Sacramento had never won a playoff game before beating Benicia in an opener and then eliminating defending champion Oakdale. CBS won D-I section titles with 13-1 teams in 1981 and ’83 and reached the 1986 finals, and then didn’t win another playoff game until this month. The quarterbacks are key today, CBS with junior Chris Guillen (2,346 yards and 20 touchdowns passing, 528 yards and 12 TDs rushing), Sacramento with sophomore Caden Voges (3,610 yards and 41 TDs passing, 663 yards and 10 TDs rushing). Voges has deep threats in Damen Wheeler (1,460 yards, 18 TDs) and Kyree Stephens (1,047 yards, 12 TDs), and the Dragons can run with power behind Lonny Powell (726 yards, nine TDs).

DIVISION VI CHAMPIONSHIP

BRADSHAW CHRISTIAN (9-2) VS. RIPON CHRISTIAN (10-2)

•  Where: Grape Bowl, Lodi

•  When: 1 p.m.

•  Outlook: Bradshaw Christian seeks a fourth section championship since 2008 and third in D-VI since 2009. The Pride is led by quarterback Kevin Williams (1,688 yards passing, 25 TDs), running back Jakobe Hawkins (1,228 yards, 12 TDs) and do-it-all Kyle Betts (946 yards and 17 TDs receiving, 477 yards and nine TDs rushing, plus six interceptions from his safety spot). Ripon Christian relies on the run, led by running back Andrew Brown, who has 45 of his team’s 63 rushing touchdowns and leads the section with 2,626 rushing yards. Ripon is coached by Randy Fasani, who was a standout quarterback for Del Oro in the mid-1990s.

DIVISION V CHAMPIONSHIP

GOLDEN SIERRA (7-5) VS. LeGRAND (11-0)

•  Where: Grape Bowl, Lodi

•  When: 6 p.m.

•  Outlook: Golden Sierra, which started the season 0-4 against larger programs such as Capital Christian, Rio Americano and Casa Roble, is in its first section title game since 1994. Brian Cann (915 yards, 12 TDs) powers the run-heavy offense and Sam Steward leads the defense with 10.7 tackles a game. Le Grand, going for a D-V title four-peat, is led by quarterback Frank Contreras (1,177 yards passing, 15 TDs) and running back Ryan Martinez (2,010 yards, 31 TDs) .
