Roseville Better Gardens Club celebrates 85 years

Published: Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 - 12:00 am

Sacramento Bee readers share their gardening adventures.

For the better part of a century, the Roseville Better Gardens Club has been doing just that – helping Roseville residents grow beautiful and productive gardens.

In October, the group marked a special milestone – its 85th birthday. Few garden clubs in the Sacramento area can claim such longevity.

“The original Roseville Better Gardens Club was organized in 1928, three years before the California Garden Clubs Inc., which was organized in 1931,” said the club’s Diane Dillard. The Roseville club is now part of the CGCI’s Golden Foothills District, one of 28 districts statewide.

For its birthday party, the club hosted a large group at the Maidu Community Center. Among the attendees were Roseville Mayor Susan Rohan, CGCI President Rita Desilets and Carlotta Wixon, CGCI’s Golden Foothills District director.

“Four presidents from other garden clubs also attended the event,” Dillard said. “We had nine former RBGC presidents in attendance as well as our current president, Joan Cuomo.”

With 53 active members, the Roseville Better Gardens Club remains very active in its community with an annual spring plant sale and monthly activities such as tours of farms or nurseries. It meets at 1 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at the Maidu Community Center. New members and other garden enthusiasts are always welcome.

“The club is open to new members who can join us in having fun at the meetings, tours and events and learning and sharing gardening tips,” Dillard said. “Refreshments and door prizes can be had by all with lots of gardening chit-chat. This is a good opportunity to get out of the house to socialize with other plant lovers.”

The club also has a new website with postings of its activities. Find it at: http://californiagardenclubs.com/content/roseville-better-gardens-club.
