A 63-year-old man from Mountain View, whose car left the roadway at 10:50 a.m. Saturday morning in West Sacramento, has been pronounced dead at UC Davis Medical Center.
The driver, whose name was not released to allow police to contact his family, was traveling eastbound on Tower Bridge Gateway road.
His late model Nissan Quest was headed toward the 5th Street intersection, near Raley Field, where the road curves slightly to the south, when his car veered off the road and into an overpass pillar, said Lt. Tod Sockman of the West Sacramento Police Department The driver was the only occupant. No other vehicles were involved, Sockman said.
“Speed had to be a factor,” said Sockman. “The front of the car was pretty smashed up. The driver was pinned inside.”
West Sacramento Fire Department personnel had to use cutting and prying tools to remove the driver.
Sockman said a witness, who was traveling behind the victim’s car, did not notice anything out of the ordinary – until the car veered off the road, Sockman said.
