Pope Francis criticizes indifference to poverty

Re "Francis forces the world to reckon with serious economic inequality" (Viewpoints, Nov. 29): Eugene Robinson's column shows us a church leader, Pope Francis, who has the courage, the audacity, to state a truth no politician would dare: Our basically unfettered capitalism and rampant materialism are not the best systems for humanity and are a serious threat to the natural world we inhabit. "The culture of prosperity deadens us...," Pope Francis states in a recent treatise. I can already hear the angry responses of "Un-American" and "Unpatriotic." Meanwhile, we will gladly accept intolerable amounts of information blasted our way without pausing to consider its usefulness or potential harm. We have been taught, rich and poor alike, by the money merchants and the ad merchants, that our status is related to our wealth and possessions. Isn't genuine wealth simply developing your best qualities and enjoying the many rich experiences that life offers? -- Michael R. Ferrick, Sacramento
