A man died this morning after being struck by a Union Pacific freight train in the Foothill Farms area, according to authorities.
The man had been laying across the tracks, Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt said in a voicemail message.
The Sacramento County Sheriffs Department and Union Pacific officials responded to the scene of the collision, which occurred about 9 a.m. near Roseville Road and Palm Avenue. The mans identity was not available.
Hunt said the train was heading from Chicago to Lathrop. It has been moved from the area, but the investigation continues, he said.
It typically takes more than a mile for crew members to stop a freight train after a collision, Hunt said. The crew members involved in todays collision will receive counseling through Union Pacifics peer support program, he said.
