Roseville officials warn of utility payment scam

Roseville city officials are warning the city’s utility customers of a payment scam.

Over the weekend, a handful of Roseville utility customers reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be with Roseville Electric and en route to disconnect the customer’s electricity due to a late payment, according to a city news release. The callers demanded payment in the form of Money Pak card account number to avoid disconnection of service.

Officials said such calls are scams. They advise residents to be skeptical of any demand for payment via money wire services such as Western Union or MoneyGram, or in the form of Greendot/Money Pak or other cash gift cards. These transactions are untraceable and non-refundable, and no utility company, they said, would ever demand payment in this form.

The city of Roseville’s utility departments – Roseville Electric and Roseville Environmental Utilities – don’t call customers to solicit payments. Authorities advise anyone who receives a call or visit from anyone claiming to be with Roseville utilities to report the incident to the city’s utility billing office at (916) 774-5300. If a person claiming to be a utility employee comes to the door and seems suspicious, immediately call Roseville police.

City officials said disconnection of power or other utilities should never come as a surprise. The billing department employs a lengthy process to warn customers about delinquent bills, and never shuts of anyone’s power or other utilities until they have mailed notices and sent several automated telephone reminders to the delinquent customer. Customers receiving an automated reminder about an overdue bill can make an immediate payment by selecting that option using their telephone and are then transferred to the city’s automated payment system. The automated system includes options for customers to listen to and verify their account information. Officials said such calls generally are made during regular business hours, not on weekends or holidays.
