Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: What is status of remaining defendants in fatal 2010 barbershop shooting?

I’d like to know if there is any information on the four people still being charged for the south Sacramento barbershop shooting that happened in December 2010 that left a mother of a 2-year-old dead.

Four men accused of murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the Dec. 14, 2010, shooting death of Monique Nelson are scheduled for trial Jan. 9, according to Sacramento Superior Court online records.

James Leo Carney III, 34, Larry Dean Jones, 32, Lonnie Orlando Mitchell, 27, and Louis James Mitchell, 32, are being held in Sacramento County Jail without bail.

Nelson, 30, was shot outside the Fly Cuts & Styles barbershop on Stockton Boulevard in south Sacramento. She had taken her 2-year-old son Jayden to the strip mall 11 days before Christmas to have his photo taken. Nelson was strapping the boy into his car seat when the shooting began and was struck by a bullet as she tried to shield her son from the gunfire.

According to stories in The Bee, the dispute that led to the shootout allegedly began with a robbery involving gold “grill” – flashy, insertable teeth.

Two other defendants in the case, Dominique Marcell Lott and Charles Barksdale, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and each was sentenced in March to 21 years in state prison.
