Former Citrus Heights officer faces sexual assault charges

Published: Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 - 1:23 pm

A former Citrus Heights police officer accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with an underage volunteer made a brief court appearance in Roseville Wednesday.

Carl Bookamer, who started with the department in 2006, is charged with three felonies and two misdemeanors related to his alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female police volunteer, including rape of an underling and lewd and lascivious acts on a child.

Bookamer was a member of the city’s police force at the time.

The department began an investigation after the allegations surfaced Oct. 26, 2012, said Gina Anderson, a department commander. She described the alleged inappropriate relationship as an “isolated incident” occurring in Placer County. Bookamer did not return to duty following the allegations. Anderson said the police department handed the findings of its investigation to the Placer County District Attorney’s office.

“The behavior was inappropriate and despicable and he is no longer employed by Citrus Heights,” Anderson said.

Bookamer, who is out on bail, made a procedural appearance before Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Penney on Wednesday.
