Sacramento police are warning people to be cautious when responding to online advertisements after arresting two men who allegedly used online ads to target people for robbery.

Police on Wednesday arrested Terrance Kimbell, 22, and Bryant Laws, 22, on suspicion of robbery. The men allegedly targeted unsuspecting victims using online ads on multiple occasions. The two also were booked on suspicion of conspiracy after an investigation revealed that they worked together, using online ads to lure their victims to prearranged meeting locations where the alleged robberies occurred, according to a Police Department news release.

The investigation is continuing, and detectives ask anyone who may have been a victim of a similar scam to report it to police.

Ayone with information pertaining to the case is asked to call the Police Department’s dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357, or text a tip to 274637. Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000

To avoid becoming a victim when buying or selling to private parties online, police recommend that people:

Research the buyer or seller.

Meet the buyer or seller during normal business hours in a public place such as the local police station.

Do not give out more information than necessary.

Deal locally and don’t carry large amounts of cash.

Trust their instincts – if the situation seems suspicious, leave the area and don’t do business with the seller.

Remember that if the deal seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Call The Bee’s Cathy Locke, (916) 321-5287.
