Sacramento Bee readers share their gardening adventures.

Every gardener needs a calendar to keep track of planting times and hoped-for harvests. (Hint: Gardening calendars make a great gift.)

For the group’s 2014 calendar and gardening companion, Placer County Master Gardeners of the University of California Cooperative Extension chose a theme that resonates with local gardeners: “You are not alone.”

We enter outdoor spaces surrounded by other creatures, big and small. Foothill gardeners battle deer, rabbits and other critters. Urban gardeners see more bugs than four-legged wildlife (not counting squirrels), but any backyard is potentially teeming with activity. (Just consider what’s been eating your plants.) In the country or city, birds of many species feel right at home.

In a month-by-month format, the Placer County calendar spotlights how gardens can coexist happily with wildlife, pets, insects and more. For example, learn how to support a community of microbes in your soil as well as how to attract beneficial insects, hummingbirds and butterflies.

A national award winner in 2009, this 13-month calendar is always popular. Designed for both beginners and seasoned veterans, the handy garden companion contains lots of basic information, such as what to plant when, seasonal crops in farmers markets, moon cycles and seasonal chores.

Suggested price is $10, although it varies by location. Look for the Placer County Master Gardeners Calendar at nurseries and garden-related stores in Placer, Nevada and El Dorado counties (a full list is available online at http://pcmg.ucanr.org/2014_Calendar). The calendar also may be ordered online via that website for $13 including shipping and handling.

Or pick one up at the UCCE Placer County Master Gardener office, 11477 E. Ave. (Building 306 in the DeWitt Center), Auburn. Call (530)889-7388 for more details.
