A Redding area insurance agent has been arrested in Shasta County for allegedly selling bogus insurance policies and pocketing the premiums.
Roger Edward Winkler, 64, was arrested and charged with five counts of felony grand theft and insurance fraud by officials from the Shasta County district attorneys office. Hes currently out on $50,000 bail and faces a court arraignment in January.
According to the state insurance department, Winkler allegedly collected insurance premiums and issued bogus insurance certificates. By charging fees for non-existent policies, Winkler essentially victimized consumers twice, said state Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. Not only did victims pay bogus premiums, but they also were unknowingly left without insurance coverage for their car, home or business.
Those who purchased a policy from Winkler are advised to contact their insurance company and verify coverage. They can also call the insurance departments consumer hotline at 800-927-4357.
