Re Billboard exposes ugly biases (Marcos Breton, Dec. 8): A billboard displays what appears to be a Muslim woman and a white American soldier. The billboard is for a company that produces a product to reduce snoring. Whats the connection between the couple and the product? It doesnt seem to matter.
The billboard turns heads because it implies that a Muslim woman is married to an American soldier. The religious and cultural backgrounds suggested by the billboard shouldnt matter. The young Muslim woman in the image is discriminated against because of Americans fear. The public judges her and assumes the worst, based on our countrys past.
The billboard isnt an insult, but I understand what prompts that kind of fearful reaction. Like the writer, I hope such hatred can become less dominant in our future.
