Mayor shouldn't fight public vote on arena

Re "Mayor acts to defend arena" (Our Region, Dec. 13): If the downtown arena is such a great idea, what is there to fear from a public vote on the project? The financing and future impacts to the city are sketchy at best. The4000 group, led by Mayor Kevin Johnson, is desperately promoting the arena, saying it will be a catalyst for broader development downtown. In my 50 years in Sacramento, I have yet to see any lasting success in ventures designed to lure suburbanites to the downtown area. The Hard Rock Cafe comes to mind. The mayor is using the bully pulpit to spearhead the attack against the arena's opposition. As mayor of all the people of Sacramento, he should be an unbiased leader, rather than so personally involved in this issue.
