Loomis Town Council taps Wheeler as mayor amid controversy

Published: Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 - 12:06 pm

The Loomis Town Council elected Dave Wheeler mayor Tuesday night in a 4-1 vote.

The vote came after a heated discussion by members of the public and Town Council. Wheeler faces an allegation from the California Public Employees’ Retirement System that he was unlawfully employed as chief of the Loomis Fire Protection District while collecting a pension from another fire district – often referred to as “double dipping.” An attorney for the fire district told CalPERS that it disagreed with the finding.

Since his election to the Town Council in 2012, a small but vocal group of citizens also has challenged the legality of his public service on both the fire district and the Town Council, saying that he has a conflict of interest.

The selection of Wheeler as mayor comes after former Mayor Walt Scherer abruptly resigned in October after 27 years on the council.
