What: Sacramento State’s Winter Jazz Fest is a daylong event that allows ensembles from elementary, middle and high schools and colleges to work with mentors and perform before an audience. As an added attraction, The Kandinsky Effect ensemble will perform with the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra, featuring vocalist Jamie Davis.

‘Hands on History’

What: Sutter’s Fort is hosting a Hands on History event with a holiday theme. In “A Simple Emigrant Christmas,” participants can try their hands at candle dipping and making cornhusk dolls as they learn about immigrant holiday traditions of the 1840s.

Nativity, music festival

What: Hundreds of professionally displayed creches from around the world can be seen at the seventh annual Elk Grove Nativity and Music Festival. There will also be a Nativity scavenger hunt, live Nativities by children and a community sing-along of Handel’s “Messiah.”

What: Children are invited to make their own candy cane reindeer, decorate a holiday cookie and enter a coloring contest at the Snow Much Fun event, sponsored by the Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation at Coloma Community Center.
