Alle Moreno made a 3-pointer and two free throws in the final 29 seconds to lift the host Sacramento State women to a 99-94 nonconference victory over UC Irvine on Saturday.
Moreno, a senior, led the Hornets (7-1) with 22 points and became the 11th player in program history to score 1,000 points, Sac State reported on its athletics website.
“I’m really proud of my team, and I’m really proud in the way Alle stepped up and hit the shot late,” Hornets coach Bunky Harkleroad said. “It was great day for her and her individual career, and our team fought through and found a way to win.”
Sac State attempted 55 3-pointers to break the NCAA single-game record. The old Division I record was 52, shared by Alabama in 1995 and Cal Poly in 1999. The Hornets made 21 3-pointers to break their Big Sky Conference record of 18 set earlier this season. Florida Gulf Coast holds the NCAA record with 22.
Sac State 85, William Jessup 54 at The Nest – Alex Tiffin had 21 points and nine rebounds to help the Hornets (3-4) beat the Warriors (5-8).
Sac State led 50-28 at halftime and never looked back, shooting 59.3 percent. Tiffin made 8 of 11 shots.
Mikh McKinney added 14 points for Sac State.
Kelton Newman (Franklin High School) scored 14 points off the bench to lead William Jessup, which shot 30.2 percent.
