BLM ready to hire for next summer’s fires

The Bureau of Land Management is gearing up for summer wildfires, despite the temperatures now chilling Northern California.

The federal agency is accepting applications for summer seasonal work on fire engine crews, a helicopter-borne fire crew and the Diamond Mountain Interagency Hotshots.

Also available are positions in the agency’s hazardous fuels reduction program, which focuses on reducing wildfire danger.

Early applicants have the best chance at landing one of these jobs, said Walter Herzog, BLM Northern California District Fire Management Officer.

The early consideration deadline for hotshot crew jobs is Tuesday, and for firefighting and fuels crew positions, Jan. 14. Applications must be filed online to receive early consideration.

Other filing deadlines are March 31 for firefighting, and April 30 for the hotshot crew.

Job announcements, including the qualifications, salaries, application instructions and application deadlines, are available at www.usajobs.gov. Applicants should look for announcement numbers BLM-FIRE-2014-005 (engines, helitack and fuels crews) and BLM-FIRE-2014-002 (hotshots), Herzog said.

Application and deadline information is also available at BLM field offices in Alturas, (530) 233-4666; Arcata, (707) 825-2300; Cedarville, (530) 279-6101; and Susanville, (530) 257-0456.

BLM’s Northern California firefighters work at stations in Susanville, Ravendale, Alturas, Cedarville and Whitethorn on California’s North Coast but they can be called to fires anywhere in the West, Fontana said. These seasonal positions usually run from June through mid October.
