Remember the recent cold snap?

That will become more of a distant memory as mild temperatures almost 10 degrees above average take hold during the coming days.

December’s average high is 54 degrees, and the low is 40 degrees.

A high-pressure ridge has parked itself over the Sacramento area and is expected to ward off extreme cold. A slight chance of rain is forecast later this week.

“There is a very, very marginal system coming in on Wednesday,” said Drew Peterson, forecast meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento. “It won’t be until Thursday morning that there is a slight chance of rain with that particular system. It is possible we might see some measurable precipitation.”

Highs on Sunday are expected to reach 50 degrees, with a low of 36 degrees.

The start of the work week will see sunny skies, with a high of 56 degrees and nighttime low of 38 degrees.

Tuesday will be practically balmy, with the thermometer topping 65 degrees during the day, dropping to 40 degrees at night.

It will be mostly sunny Wednesday, with a high near 61 degrees, but as the clouds start moving in that night, the low will be 43 degrees.

Showers might dampen the are Thursday morning, but clouds clear out and leave a sunny Friday, with daytime temperatures ranging from a high of 56 degrees and a low about 38 degrees.

“The lack of storms is causing the higher highs and the lower lows,” said Peterson.

December is typically the coldest month of the year for the Sacramento area.

“We’re warmer as we get into the month, but we did have that very cold period, so by the end of the month, we’ll average out closer to normal.,” he said.
