Re "Atheists just want equality" (Letters, Dec. 4): Janet Thew wrote that she came to believe no loving God would allow such endless suffering, but I don't believe God allows suffering. To the extent that suffering can be eased or eliminated - that's on us, the human race. God, the Creator, has given us life, not a ride at Disneyland. Along with the beauty of nature, we also get the laws of nature, which encompass things like severe weather and life-threatening diseases. But God has also given us intelligence, free will, and the capacity to choose love and compassion. Believers or non-believers, it's we who need to not allow suffering. Tall order, I know, but it's what I believe. Lastly, I too recognize that belief (or lack thereof) does not determine one's goodness.
