Re "City arena subsidy faces new debate" (Page A1, Dec. 6): The plan for Sacramento tax dollars to subsidize the new downtown arena is troubling, and yet all too familiar. The story of sports team owners demanding a new stadium at the threat of moving to another city is a sickening trend in government subsidies and one to which the people of Sacramento seem to have fallen victim. Subsidies like these are a way to ensure that the opportunistic industry tycoons who benefit from these deals have little to lose but millions to gain in their gamble with public dollars. No matter the outcome, Sacramento residents will end up footing the bill. In a country where the poor and middle class are under constant attack, is it right to abide by this concept of socialism for the rich?
