The Sacramento County coroner’s office has released the name of the motorcyclist who died from injuries suffered in a crash Monday morning on Interstate 80.

He was identified as Robert N. Ivey, 53, of Carmichael. Ivey was a member of the Air Force reserve and a veteran of service in Afghanistan.

The California Highway Patrol reported that at about 6:30 a.m. Monday they received a call that a motorcyclist was injured on westbound I-80 west of West El Camino Avenue.

An investigation revealed that the motorcyclist had braked hard to avoid a back-up of traffic from a earlier traffic collision. Ivey lost control of his motorcycle, causing him to be thrown off the vehicle.

While on the pavement, he was struck by at least one vehicle. The vehicle did not immediately stop, but a CHP spokesman said on Monday that he believed the motorist was located later.

Ivey died at the scene.

Travis Air Force Base officials said in a statement that Chief Master Sgt. Ivey, air transportation manager of the 55th Aerial Port Squadron, was respected for his professionalism and dedication to his troops. Ivey, a full-time Air Reserve technician, was on his way to work when he died in the crash.

Ivey joined the the Air Force Reserve’s 349th Air Mobility Wing in 1996.
