UPDATE: Sacramento police say suspicious package at motel was electronic equipment

Published: Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013 - 8:20 pm

Sacramento police explosives experts have determined that a suspicious object found in a motel room this afternoon was a piece of electronic equipment, not an explosive device.

A Motel 6 in the 7800 block of College Town Drive, near the California State University, Sacramento campus was evacuated and the road closed between Howe Avenue and La Riviera Drive.

Police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante said a guest had checked out of the motel room earlier in the day and about 3:45 p.m., a housekeeper discovered an object that looked like electronic equipment. Wary of the object, however, the housekeeper reported it and police were summoned.

Gigante said officers likewise considered the object suspicious and called in the department’s explosive ordnance disposal unit.

Gigante said the motel was evacuated as a precaution. Guests were allowed to return to their rooms shortly before 8 p.m.
