Homicide detectives are investigating a shootout in south Sacramento that resulted in the deaths of two young men.

A third man also was injured in the shooting, which was reported about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday night in the 6000 block of Ventura Street.

When officers arrived at the scene – located just south of the now-shuttered Collis P. Huntington Elementary School – they found the two victims. They were later pronounced dead. Their names had not been released by Wednesday evening.

The third victim showed up at an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to detectives, three men were in the driveway of a Ventura Street home when another group drove up. Two men got out of the vehicle and fired, killing a 25-year-old man in the driveway and injuring a 24-year-old man, said police Officer Michele Gigante.

One of the men from the car, said to be 21 years old, also died when the group in the driveway returned fire. The car then sped from the scene.

The neighborhood, not far from Sacramento Executive Airport, was quiet Wednesday morning, as detectives remained on scene investigating.

Gigante said a motive for the shooting was not known.
