State worker defends benefits

Re “Retirees earned benefits” (Letters, Dec. 7): I concur with retiree Cindy Edwards who wrote that her health care benefits were part of her compensation for 35 years as a state worker. I also worked for the state for 35 years. I was laid off twice, and my pay was frozen for many years to help balance the state budget. I also knew people working outside the state system who made 50 percent more than I did for the same type of job. However, I don't regret my service for the California Legislature. Working decades on a graveyard shift, the job was mentally and physically challenging. But our work for the Legislature was second to none. We were innovative and efficient. -- R.J.
