The Sacramento County coroner’s office has released the name of one of two men shot dead in gunfire Tuesday night in south Sacramento.

He was identified as Sheldon Smith, 25, of Sacramento.

A third man also was injured in the shooting, which was reported about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 6000 block of Ventura Street.

When officers arrived at the scene they found the two victims who later were pronounced dead at the scene. The third victim showed up at an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to detectives, three men were in the driveway of a Ventura Street home when another group drove up. Two men got out of the vehicle and fired, killing Smith in the driveway and injuring a 24-year-old man, said police Officer Michele Gigante.

One of the men from the car, said to be 21 years old, also died when the group in the driveway returned fire. The car then sped from the scene.

Witnesses and people possibly involved in the shooting incident have been contacted by police. No motive for the gunfire has been released.
