TRUCKEE -- A Truckee juvenile was arrested Wednesday after allegedly confessing to more than a dozen mail thefts and four burglaries the day before.
On Tuesday, the Truckee Police Department received more than a dozen reports in the Glenshire subdivision related to mail tampering. Additionally, two businesses and two residences were burglarized.
An investigation led to the juvenile, who was in possession of some of the stolen property and led police to locations where additional items had been stashed, according to the police report.
Some of the property included gift cards of significant value in holiday cards stolen from street-side mailboxes. With information from the reports, officers were able to return the stolen items to their owners.
In one instance, the suspect had stolen $100 in cash from a card and had already spent some of it before his arrest. Police officers replaced the missing amount with their own funds in order to return the entire gift to the victim.
The juvenile, arrested on suspicion of burglary, mail tampering and theft, was booked into Nevada County Juvenile Hall.
Police are cautioning residents to collect their mail daily from street-side boxes, especially during the holidays, and to take outgoing mail to the post office.
They ask anyone with additional information to call the Truckee Police Department at (530) 550-2320.
