An increasingly frustrated Michael Malone feels the Kings’ defensive flaws fall on his shoulders.

Pregame notes: Kings need more discipline to upset Miami

Kings coach Michael Malone said a “lack of discipline” was the primary culprit in the defensive breakdowns in Wednesday’s loss to Atlanta. Malone said eight of the Hawks’ first 10 made shots were layups.

If the Kings have those problems tonight, the Miami Heat will likely win in a blowout as the Hawks did.

“We were gambling,” Malone said. “We leave our feet on shot fakes, we gamble for steals and we don’t execute the coverage at all times. When we have done those things, we’ve done a very good job and beat some good teams. It’s a matter of doing those things consistently.”

*Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said the Heat want to put a lot of pressure on Isaiah Thomas, which might leave Miami “exposed a little bit” defending DeMarcus Cousins.

“We want to be disruptive, but that will be like trying to corral a spinning top,” Spoelstra said. “We want to apply a lot of pressure on (Thomas) and have to have him make a lot of decisions under pressure tonight.”

Prediction time: There’s no reason to expect the Kings won’t be focused against the defending NBA Champions. But it’s still a lot to ask a struggling team to fix everything defensively and make it tough on Miami.
