Two booked after shots fired at Placer County deputy’s car

Two men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a Placer County sheriff’s deputy was fired upon early Sunday.

Eric Anthony Eaton, 31, and Phillip Daniel Murphy, 20, of Foresthill were taken into custody after some difficulty. A police dog had to be deployed to get Eaton and special tactical officers were called to take Murphy to jail.

At about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, a deputy tried to stop a car on Lincoln Way near Russell Road in Auburn. The car took off toward Foresthill with somebody in the car firing at least two shots at the deputy’s patrol car, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

About a half-mile past Foresthill, the fleeing car crashed into a telephone pole. The driver and passenger ran into the woods.

Officers found Eaton about 20 minutes later with the aid of a police dog. Eaton had to be treated at a hospital before being booked.

Deputies suspected the other man was Murphy, and they located him at a home on Lowe Street in Foresthill.

When Murphy would not come outside, Special Enforcement Team deputies entered a bedroom of the home and took him into custody.

Deputies said the crashed car was reported stolen several days ago.

Both men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and evading police.
