Boys were tough audience at ballet

Re “Ready … set … ‘Nutcracker’ (Our Region, Dec. 15): “The Nutcracker” is designed to entertain everyone. Well, almost everyone.

Years ago, my son's fifth-grade class was scheduled to take a field trip to see “The Nutcracker,” and I got stuck driving a carload of boys. The school’s expectation was that even the boys would come away with a greater appreciation of classical music and dance.

But talk about a tough audience: At first, the boys seemed willing to watch the perforamance, but soon they were all asking when it would be over.

I’m not sure the school ever again scheduled a field trip to expand the cultural appreciation of fifth-grade boys.

As for me, I thought it was the best performance of “The Nutcracker” ever.
