Sacramento ties high temperature records for Dec. 24

If you can’t have a white Christmas, the next best thing is a bright one.

The day before Christmas brought T-shirt weather to the Sacramento area.

“Santa is very happy,” said Johnnie Powell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “We got no rain, but he brought us plenty of sunshine.”

Sacramento tied the record high for Dec. 24 at two locations Tuesday. Executive Airport recorded a high of 65 degrees, tying the previous record for the day before Christmas set in 1964. Downtown Sacramento reached a high of 66 degrees, tying the record set in 2005, Powell said.

The high temperature for 12 of the past 13 days has been 60 degrees or above, and the forecast calls for more of the same into next week. A high of 63 is expected in the Sacramento area today, with a high of 68 degrees forecast for Saturday. The foothills, too, will be sunny with a high of 59 in Placerville forecast for today and 60 degrees Thursday.

To the north, Redding is expected to see a high near 71 today.

It may feel more like winter in the Sierra, although no snow is in the forecast. After projected overnight lows in the upper teens, freezing fog is expected to give way to sunshine with a high around 47 degrees today in Truckee.
