Edward Snowden left biggest mark in 2013

Re "In 2013, who left the biggest mark?" (Viewpoints, Dec. 25): I agree with columnist Eugene Robinson that Edward Snowden left the biggest mark this year. If Snowden's revelations of an Orwellian nightmare come true, the destruction of personal privacy by the National Security Agency trumps almost anything else happening. If you lose personal freedom, you can't enjoy what others may bring to the table, including Pope Francis. There are those who claim Snowden should turn himself in and face the music, but I doubt if he would get a fair trial, if he got one at all. Everything Snowden would want to use in his defense would be deemed inadmissible, and witnesses would be reluctant to come forward. There might be no end to the mischief created by federal prosecutors. Consider the plight of other defendants who have languished at Guantanamo for years without being charged or tried. -- Judith Fox, Citrus Heights
