Re "Vets' advisers, caregivers exploit VA aid program" (Page A4, Dec. 24): Whenever there is a buck to be made, someone will try to make it. Unfortunately, that is often at the financial and emotional expense of veterans who honorably served our country. The Department of Veterans Affairs certifies lawyers, financial planners and other for-profit entities to file benefits claims on behalf of veterans. Some veterans are willing to pay for that service, but that's not their best or only option. The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), county Veterans Service Offices, and CalVet-certified veterans service organizations provide benefits claims filing services free of charge to veterans and their families. The latter organizations include the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. When seeking veterans benefits information or assistance in filing claims, a California veteran's best bet is to contact CalVet, his county Veterans Service Office, or a CalVet-certified veterans service organization.
