A teenager who was shot on Christmas Day in a south Sacramento neighborhood died Saturday.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the youth as Bryan Castanon, 15, of Sacramento.

Castanon was one of three teenage boys who authorities said were shot by two men on Dec. 25.

Shortly before 9:44 p.m. Christmas Day, police responded to a shooting in the 7400 block of 29th Street, near Edward Kemble Elementary School. When they arrived, they found Castanon in critical condition and had him taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

While officers were there, they were informed by medical staff that another shooting victim, a second teenage boy, had shown up at the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

As investigators began interviewing witnesses, they found that a third victim, a male teenager, had been struck by gunfire. He was taken by police to the hospital and was expected to survive.

Police said they learned that the three boys were with several other teens before the incident, and the youths were approached by two men on foot. An argument between the teens and the men escalated into violence, when the adults shot at the victims, police said, and the suspects then fled on foot. One of the shooting victims called police about the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Editor’s note: This story was changed Jan. 2 because the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office corrected the spelling of Bryan Castanon’s name.
