Re "Insurance regulator pushes for more power" (Page A1, Dec. 22): Christopher Cadelago's article about California's insurance commissioner seeking re-election dismisses the need to regulate skyrocketing health insurance premiums. We applaud Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones for embracing the 2014 initiative to extend to individual and small-group health insurance the same Proposition 103 rate approval process that has successfully protected consumers from excessive auto and homeowners insurance rate increases. A November 2013 report by Consumer Federation of America found Proposition 103 saved California automobile insurance policyholders $102 billion since its passage in 1988. Our organization has worked collaboratively with Jones, both as a state assemblyman and as insurance commissioner. He fights to protect consumers from insurance industry rip-offs. At the same time, he is mindful of the importance of promoting a robust and competitive insurance marketplace. We have always found him an effective insurance commissioner.
