The State Worker’s Top 10: Jerry Brown sends pay signal

Published: Monday, Dec. 30, 2013 - 10:54 am

Looking back at the 450 entries posted on The State Worker blog in 2013, news about government compensation drew more views than any other topic.

It makes sense. Contracts for nearly all of the state-employee unions were set to expire on July 1, 2 or 3. A string of gloomy budgets gave way to sunny fiscal forecasts, buoyed by an improving economy and tax hikes that kicked in courtesy of voter-approved Proposition 30.

Given all that good news – at least if you’re a state employee who endured four years of furloughs – hope was running high that 2013-14 might be the year that Gov. Jerry Brown would open the wallet for state workers.

During a May 14 budget briefing, however, Brown sent a clear signal that became the basis of the 10th-most-viewed State Worker blog item of 2013: Jerry Brown ‘aiming low' on pay for state employees.

This is the first in series looks back at The State Worker’s 10 most-viewed blog posts of 2013.
