2013 looks like driest year on record for Sacramento

Published: Monday, Dec. 30, 2013 - 9:23 pm

Sacramento gets about 18 inches of rain in a typical year. In 2013, it’s barely rained 6 inches.

If predictions hold for dry weather during the next two days, 2013 will be the driest year on record for the city, lower than the 6.7 inches of rain seen in 1976, according to National Climatic Data Center records that run back to 1878.

The lack of rain here and elsewhere could lead to more wildfires and trouble for the state’s farmers. It’s already caused water rationing in parts of the Sacramento region.

This chart shows the amount of rainfall in Sacramento each year from 1878 to 2013.
