Sacramento County public health department recommends one flu shot per season

Published: Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 - 5:03 pm

Officials at the Sacramento County Department of Public Health said Tuesday they recommend people receive one influenza shot per flu season.

The predominant strain this 2013-2014 flu season, according to state and national officials, is a version of the H1N1 pandemic flu that hit the Sacramento region especially hard in 2009. The main characteristic of this strain of influenza A is that it afflicts mainly healthy young adults and middle-aged people.

It’s not too late to get vaccinated, says the county public health department. Flu vaccines take two weeks to become fully effective and lasts for about three months, shorter than the flu season, which may stretch from October-November to April. Some doctors advise the elderly, in particular, to get two doses of the vaccine, three months apart. The county public health department, however, recommends one vaccination per flu season.
