In a historic first – and last – Sutter Memorial Hospital delivers Sacramento’s New Year’s baby

Sutter Memorial Hospital in east Sacramento, the region’s baby factory for more than 75 years, has produced Sacramento’s 2014 New Year’s baby.

She is Milan Le Dao. Milan arrived via natural birth at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, a healthy 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and 19¼ inches long.

The birth marks a first, and a historic last.

It is the first child for Sidney Le, 32, of Elk Grove, and her fiancée Andy Dao, 29.

And it is the last time the region’s most famous baby hospital will win the annual New Year’s Day first-baby competition among local hospitals.

Sutter Memorial Hospital, originally known in 1937 as Sutter Maternity Hospital, will shut its doors permanently later this year after serving as the birth site for more than 340,000 Sacramentans over the decades. Sutter officials will move operations this fall or winter to a new women’s and children’s center in midtown at the expanded Sutter General Hospital campus.

Le said she had arrived at the hospital at 7 a.m. Tuesday expecting an evening delivery, but “my daughter is stubborn. She wanted to be a New Year’s baby.”

The baby had some fluid in her lungs but is fine, the mother reported Wednesday amid a series of TV and press interviews. Dad, she said, is happy and excited to meet “daddy’s little girl.”

Le, an award-winning makeup artist, met Dao several years ago when she was hired to do the hair and makeup for his sister’s wedding. She operates sidneyle.com. She and Dao are starting a Sacramento-based beauty product line they call Blink Beauty.

They chose the name Milan for their first child because it is similar to the child’s Vietnamese name, My Lan, and because mom likes the city of Milan, Italy.

“Milan is a fashion city. I love fashion and make-up,” Le said.

Sutter Memorial officials said they are pleased with the New Year’s baby victory.

“It’s fitting that Sutter (Memorial) has the first baby of the year, since 2014 will be its final year,” Sutter spokesman Gary Zavoral said. “The new women and children’s center will have the best equipment, the latest technology and great eighth-floor views.

“It will be a great experience for thousands of Sacramentans to be born there.”
