Sacramento-area law enforcement agencies report they arrested nearly 250 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the first two weeks of a special holiday anti-DUI campaign.

The 248 arrests in the two weeks leading up to Christmas is more than the 227 DUI arrests made in the same period last year and reflect a concerted effort by 17 regional agencies to reduce drunk driving, according to Officer Andrew Bates of the Folsom Police Department.

Bates reported that there were no alcohol-related fatal crashes in the area on Christmas Day.

The effort, called the Winter Avoid DUI campaign, ends at midnight Jan. 1. Officials said they continue to encourage people to report drunk drivers by calling 911.
