Low water in Folsom Lake and ongoing drought conditions have brought on water-use restrictions across the region, in some cases the most severe since the drought of 1976-77. Storage in the reservoir dropped below 20 percent of its capacity last week.

Warm and dry weather forecast for Sacramento through weekend

The new year is looking a lot like the old year weather-wise: warm and dry.

High pressure along the west coast will continue to bring weather that warms a cat sitting in a windowsill just fine, but does absolutely nothing for parched reservoirs. What the Sacramento area needs is some big black storm clouds, but the National Weather Service has none of that in the forecast.

Breezy north and east winds are possible late Friday and Saturday. And there is a slight chance of showers in the middle of next week as a weak atmospheric weather trough move over the west coast.

Until then, near record warm temperatures are forecast. Thursday’s maximum temperature in Sacramento is expected to reach 66 degrees.

If the temperature hits 66 degrees, the record set on Jan. 2, 1940 of 65 degrees would be broken. The extended forecast for the Sacramento region:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Calm wind becoming north northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. Calm wind.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Calm wind becoming north northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.
