Sacramento police have released more information about shots that were fired in Old Sacramento during this years mostly law-abiding New Years Eve fireworks celebration.
Tuesday night's New Year's Eve fireworks show, an event that drew about 20,000 people, resulted in fewer than a dozen arrests. The year before, the event was marred by two fatal shootings.
This year, around midnight, officers quickly responded to reports of shots fired at an Old Sacramento parking garage on Neasham Circle near the Tower Bridge. Officers were close by and heard the shots.
Witness identified two people who were involved and also helped in the recovery of a gun that was apparently discarded by the shooter.
Rafael Gustavo Avendano, 22, was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of carrying a stolen and loaded firearm in a vehicle, participation in a street gang, buying or receiving stolen property, discharging a weapon in a negligent manner and two other street gang-related charges.
Also arrested was Tatiana R. Lee, 24, on suspicion of participation in a street gang and a probation violation.
Police suspect that Avendano walked over to a parking garage railing, pointed the gun skyward and discharged the handgun in a celebratory manner, according to a press release.
