Pols should add jobs, not lower pensions

Re "Millions feel pain of unemployment" (Letters, Jan. 2): While I also sympathize with the letter writer who complained about her husband losing his unemployment benefits, I also want to be realistic. There is a difference between pensions and entitlements. I earned my pension and was promised an amount that was never to be lowered or changed. This is also my view on Social Security benefits. I paid into both these systems, with a promise to be paid a certain amount for life. I earned these. So, why should my benefits be lowered because politicians cannot perform their jobs? Veterans should receive what they were promised. The solution is not more unemployment benefits or lower pensions, but the creation of jobs. This is what the vast majority of people really want, anyway
